Why owners do it
Water and fine debris in fuel are a common cause of hard starting and poor running. An extra filter or a water separator is a cheap way to protect the injection pump or carburettor.
What is involved
- Mount the separator upright, below the tank outlet and above the engine inlet where possible.
- Plumb it into the supply line with fuel-rated hose and clamps.
- Bleed the fuel system after fitting if the engine is a diesel.
Typical parts
- Water separator or inline fuel filter
- Fuel-rated hose and clamps
- Mounting bracket
Check before you start
- Match the filter flow rating to the engine.
- Drain the separator bowl at each service.
