Why owners do it
Some budget machines have no hour meter, or one that is unreliable. Engine hours drive oil, filter and grease intervals, so owners add one.
What is involved
- On petrol engines, an inductive meter wraps a lead around the spark plug lead.
- On diesels, use a meter wired to an ignition-switched circuit or a vibration-triggered unit.
- Mount it where you can read it from the seat.
Typical parts
- Inductive or wired hour meter
- Mounting bracket or panel cut-out
Check before you start
- Record the hours when fitted and note it in your service log.
