Why owners do it
Small factory tanks can mean stopping to refuel part way through a job, and on some layouts the filler sits under the seat or a cover. Owners relocate the tank, fit a larger one or add an auxiliary tank.
What is involved
- Find a protected location away from the exhaust, the swing path and pinch points.
- Mount the tank on a bracket with rubber isolation, and keep it vented.
- Use fuel-rated hose and proper clamps, with a shut-off tap and an inline filter.
- On diesel engines, return the fuel return line to the tank, not the pump inlet.
Typical parts
- Fuel tank suited to petrol or diesel
- Fuel-rated hose and clamps
- Shut-off tap
- Inline filter or water separator
- Mounting bracket and rubber isolators
Check before you start
- Gravity-fed fuel systems need the tank above the carburettor or pump inlet; check how yours is fed first.
- Keep the tank and lines well away from hot exhaust parts.
- Check that added weight does not foul the counterweight, covers or service access.
