Why owners do it
Machines with hydraulic pilot joysticks run a bundle of small rubber hoses from the joysticks to the control valve. On some builds these rub on frame edges, sit near the exhaust or use fittings that weep. Owners replace them with better-rated hose, re-route and protect them, and use the work to change the control pattern if needed.
What is involved
- Shut down, lower the boom and bucket to the ground and cycle the joysticks to relieve pressure.
- Label every hose at both ends before disconnecting anything.
- Replace hoses with rated hydraulic hose of the correct size and fitting type.
- Re-route away from sharp edges and heat, secure with clamps and add spiral wrap where hoses move or touch metal.
- To change between ISO and SAE control patterns, swap the relevant hose pairs at the valve and label the new pattern by the seat.
Typical parts
- Rated hydraulic hose and crimped fittings
- Spiral wrap or hose sleeve
- P-clamps and cable ties
- Hose labels
Check before you start
- Identify the thread type with a thread gauge; do not assume.
- Test every function slowly after reconnecting, with no one near the machine.
- Check for leaks after the first hour of work.
